Clover Mites
Clover mites are small, reddish-brown mites about 1/30” long and can be distinguished from other mites by the extra-long front legs that are visible with a magnifying glass. These mites have become a commonly found occasional invader inside homes and on
lawns due to the increase in homes and the installation of fertilized lawns growing up against the foundations. Clover mites are found to be most active in the spring and fall, when thousands of these mites maybe seen inside homes.
Clover Mite Infestations
Clover mite infestations generally occur on homes with well fertilized lawns growing up to the foundation when the population has grown in excess or at the beginning of hot or cold weather when feeding areas have become stressed. These mites will normally appear first around the window sills and later spread to different areas of the home as the infestation increases. They are a nuisance pest that does not bite or cause damage inside of your home, but will leave a red stain when crushed.
Clover Mite Prevention
Prevention is the most important step in stopping an ongoing clover mite issue at your home.
Caulk cracks around windows and doors.
Search for any cracks around foundation and seal
Caulk any gaps around pipe penetrations on the exterior of the home.
Create a grass-free zone around the perimeter of the home with a minimum distance of 18”-36”. Gravel can be used in this zone to assist with aesthetics.
If plantings are preferred in this zone, choose plants that are not attractive to clover mites including arborvitae, juniper, spruce, roses, or chrysanthemums. Be sure to keep this area free of any grasses, fallen leaves or weeds.
How to Get Rid of Clover Mites
There are several steps you can take to get rid of clover mites.
Use a vacuum to remove large numbers of the mites being careful not to crush them on light-colored draperies, carpets, sofas and other light-colored articles.
Remove any remaining mites on the interior that were not vacuumed with soap and water.
Apply a properly labeled residual pesticide to the window and door sills on the exterior.
A perimeter application should be applied 6 to 10 feet wide around the perimeter of the foundation.
Read and follow all label directions as directed on the pesticide being used.
