Spider Facts

About 40,000 species of spiders exist worldwide.  Spiders are classified as arachnids and have 8 legs along with two body segments called the cephalothorax and abdomen.  Webs are made of silk produced by specialized glands located in the abdomen.

Types of Spiders

Northern and Southern Black Widow Spider

The southern black widow is more common in Knoxville, TN, but both species can be found.  These spiders are normally shy unless they are bothered.    The females are highly poisonous and can be identified by the red to orange hourglass on the abdomen.  These spiders can be found on the interior or exterior of homes and businesses in dark secluded areas.  It is important to be cautious when moving firewood or rocks to prevent being bitten.

Brown Recluse Spider

The brown recluse is poisonous and as the name suggests is reclusive and will normally only bite when threatened.   These spiders are brown and about the size of a quarter with a violin-shaped marking on its back.  These spiders normally are found in dark hidden places but can find there way into clothing and in sheets on the bed.

Wolf Spider

Wolf spiders will normally only bite when provoked.   These spiders can find there way into homes in Knoxville, TN in search of insects they feed on.  Once they find there way inside they will normally stay.  These spiders are commonly seen by people and will normally remain at floor level once inside.

Cellar Spider

Cellar spiders are normally found in dark, damp areas such as basements and crawl spaces, but can also be found in garages, warehouses and barns.  These spiders continually add webbing which can result in heavy webbing buildup in a short period.  Cellar spiders do not pose a threat to people.

Daddy Long Legs or Harvestmen

Daddy Long Legs are arachnids, but not spiders due to the fact they do not have two body segments.  Cellar spiders are also referred to as Daddy Long Legs as well.  Harvestmen have no fangs or venom glands and thus not poisonous.  These arachnids are lone hunters and do not build webs.

Spider Prevention

  1. Spiders are predators of insects and to control spiders it is important to reduce insect activity inside and on the exterior of your home or business.

  2. When dealing with brown recluse spiders it is vital to remove dead insects such as Asian lady beetles that have overwintered in the home.  These insects will be used as a food source.

  3. Removal of webbing and eggs on a routine basis on the exterior and interior.   This can be performed with a vacuum or broom.

  4. Reduction of lighting on the exterior prevents attracting other insects to the structure.   Installation of sodium vapor bulbs can assist with the reduction of attractiveness.

  5. Reduction of clutter on the exterior and interior eliminates hiding spots.

  6. Insure windows are screened to prevent insect entry as well as spider entry.

  7. Remove any vegetation or tree limbs from touching the structure.

  8. Plumbing and other penetrations or cracks should be sealed on the exterior to prevent entrance or harborage.
